It’s time to start really listening to the voices of older adults

Last night in his State of the Union address President Biden drew attention to proposed new rules for nursing home operators that are being developed by his Administration. These regulatory updates will address issues like overcrowding, staffing levels, inappropriate use of antipsychotic medications, penalties for poor-performing nursing homes and more.

“Medicare is going to set higher standards for nursing homes and make sure your loved ones get the care they deserve” Biden said.   One goal among many? The pursuit of transparency that helps older adults and their loved ones make informed decisions about care.  At the Age-Friendly Institute, that’s music to our ears.

We operate agefriendly.org, a first of its kind, non-profit website that provides older adults and caregivers with trusted content and invites their feedback. User rating and reviews sites exist in many categories (like travel and shopping) to create trust and drive purchasing decisions. To date, a comparable site for aging programs and services has not existed.  We’re changing that.
